March 2013 Precipitation Review

Here is a composite chart showing rainfall for the month of March, 2013.  A total of 4.82 inches of rainfall was recorded over 10 precipitation days, with one day of Trace rainfall, in www.cocorahs.org rain gauge MS-SF-1, located on the north side of Indianola, Mississippi.  For March, there were primarily three rain events, with 0.68 recorded March 11th, 2.94" between March 22nd and 25th, and 0.98" recorded between March 30th and 31st.  For comparison, CoCoRaHS station MS-WS-1 near Leland recorded 3.92 inches for the month of March.

Year-to-Date MS-SF-1 has recorded 20.39 inches of precipitation.

If you're willing to record daily precipitation totals, please visit the CoCoRaHS website linked above for more information on how to join the network.  CoCoRaHS data is used by a wide variety of organizations, including the National Weather Service, emergency mangers, hydrologists, and many others.  CoCoRaHS data can be enhanced by having one station per square mile in urban areas, and one station every 36 square miles (survey township size) in rural areas.

Starting this month, we're excited to introduce a new feature to our monthly report.  Below, you'll see a spreadsheet that captures each month's total precipitation at our station, and the number of days precipitation was recorded for the month.  Also included is the 30-year average precipitation for each month, and a column that shows the current month's departure from that normal, expressed in percentage.  Departures that represent below-average rainfall will be illustrated in various colors, depending on how far below normal the measurements are.  (Note: rain is falling on March 31, 2013.  Rainfall between 7am on March 31 and 7am April 1 will be reflected in the April totals.)

Weekly Rainfall 3/24-30/2013

We're looking for volunteer observers to participate in the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network!  You can join the network by visiting www.cocorahs.org for information on how to join, and where you can purchase a CoCoRaHS gauge.  Many counties in Mississippi have no observers at all, so if  you routinely measure and record rainfall totals, please consider becoming a CoCoRaHS volunteer.  If your county already has observers, your data is still useful to the National Weather Service, emergency management, and a host of community organizations.  Click here for an article previously published on this website concerning the need for CoCoRaHS volunteers.

The data below was compiled using a www.cocorahs.org rain gauge on the north side of Indianola, MS over the past week.  The gauge is read and emptied at approximately 7:00am daily, therefore the rainfall total shown each day is from the prior 24 hours starting at 7:00am.

Total rainfall for the week was 1.22".

Easter morning storms

Your friendly writer believes that Easter Sunday should always be greeted with a bright sunrise, clear blue skies and temperatures in the 70's...but it looks like Easter 2013 will be anything but.

Along the Highway 82 corridor, and north of Interstate 20, expect more than one round of strong storms starting early Easter morning and lasting through early afternoon.  While we expect the storms to remain below severe limits, small hail and brief gusty winds up to 45mph are possible with storms tomorrow.

Sunflower Co, MS Observers Wanted

If you live in Sunflower County, Mississippi (or any Mississippi county), and routinely keep up with rainfall at your house, the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) wants your input!

CoCoRaHS is a network of community-based volunteers working together to measure, record, report and map precipitation.  The data generated by the CoCoRaHS network is used by the National Weather Service forecast offices, NWS River Forecast Centers, NASA, media, and researchers.  By having a high-density network of observers, forecasters and planners can build more accurate models and forecasts of floods, droughts, and other weather-related matters.  Anyone can participate - farmers, schools, businesses...anyone with an interest in weather, an internet connection, and a CoCoRaHS rain gauge.

Signing up is easy, just visit www.cocorahs.org for details on how to sign up, where to order the proper rain gauge, and useful program educational material.

Currently in Sunflower County, Mississippi, there are only two registered CoCoRaHS stations, both in the City of Indianola.  For the network to be most effective, an even distribution of CoCoRaHS stations around the county would provide a wealth of precipitation data, and a more accurate picture of area rainfall.

Here's a listing of areas that CoCoRaHS stations would be beneficial.  If you know anyone that lives near these areas (within a mile or two), please share this article with them.

Each town: Inverness, Moorhead, Sunflower, Ruleville, Drew would benefit from at least one observer.  For Indianola, due to the size of the city, three to four more observers would provide adequate coverage.  If you live in Indianola, we're looking for a volunteers in these areas:
1.  Bayou Drive or Hummingbird/Cardinal Circle areas
2.  Morningside/Sunset, Paris Circle, West Gresham or Woodbine area
3.  Garrard Ave/Jefferson St areas (great project for Merritt Middle, Carver Elem, or Gentry High School)

For county residents, potential locations include:
Kinlock/Waco Road intersection area
Caile Community area
Kinlock/Dement Road intersection area
Rupert Baird Road area
Moorhead-Belzoni/Hobbs Road area
Marie Community area
Idlewood area (Hwy 49N at Sunflower River)
Inwood area (Hwy 3 North)
Hwy 448/Muzzi Road area
Steiner/Steed Mixon Road intersection area
Fisackerly/Bolling Road intersection area
Hwy 442/Linn Methodist Church area
Hwy 442 between Doddsville and Leflore County Line
Drew-Rulleville/Ralph Ray Road intersection area
Stancel Lane area
Dwiggins community NW of Drew
Whitney community
Rome community

Of course, anyone, anywhere in the county is welcome to participate!  The areas listed give a relatively even distribution of the stations, about 6-8 miles apart.

As we mentioned earlier, if you know anyone in or reasonably near the areas listed, please share this article with them.  More information means better forecasting and modeling.  Thanks for considering!!!

Mississippi Precipitation and CoCoRaHS Observers

A number of our readers like to know daily rainfall amounts for their area.  The NWS Jackson office publishes a daily report called the COCORAHS PRECIPITATION SUMMARY, which captures the data submitted daily by observers in the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network.  Network members submit daily precipitation reports that NWS and a host of other agencies and organizations use for climatological modeling and flood predictions.  You can find that product at http://www.nws.noaa.gov/view/validProds.php?prod=LCO&node=KJAN, feel free to bookmark the link.

The CoCoRaHS Network is looking for volunteers!  Being a volunteer observer only requires about five minutes of your morning, to measure, record, and report your daily precipitation total.  Logging can be done via computer or mobile smartphone application.  The goal of the network is to have one observer per 36-square-mile area in rural settings, and one per square mile in urban areas.  Some counties in Mississippi have no observation stations at all, others only have one.  US Amateur Radio Station K5JAW hosts CoCoRaHS Station MS-SF-1 in Sunflower County.  Here is a map showing current CoCoRaHS observation stations in Mississippi:
Map from Tory Farney and the Mississippi CoCoRaHS Newsletter

Please consider joining the network.  You can sign up and order your gauge at www.cocorahs.org.  The process is simple, and the only cost you have is the gauge purchase.

Here is today's statewide CoCoRaHS precipitation report that we referred to earlier:
