Flood Information for the Weekend

A number of flood watches and warnings are in effect for portions of the weekend and early next week.  This post will look at information for the Sunflower River in Sunflower County, MS.

A FLOOD WARNING is in effect for the Sunflower River at Sunflower.
A FLASH FLOOD WATCH is in effect for a number of Delta-area counties from 6:00pm tonight through 6:00pm Sunday, January 13, 2013.

The 7:00am observed stage of the Sunflower River in the town of Sunflower, MS, was 22.04' and rising.  Flood stage for the Sunflower River at Sunflower is 21'.

The Sunflower will continue to rise with a forecast crest of 26 feet Monday night/Tuesday morning with moderate flooding occurring west of the river.  Record flood stage for the Sunflower River at Sunflower is 28.37 feet on March 18, 1973.

Rainfall through Tuesday morning may be between 2 and 4 inches northwest of the Natchez Trace Parkway, with locally higher amounts possible.

Flood effects for the Sunflower River at Sunflower:
21 feet - Fields west of river flood
23 feet - farm roads become inundated (west of the river)
25 feet - water begins to spread across farmlands from flooding at Jones Bayou, with widespread agricultural flooding in the area
26 feet - low lying streets along the river begin to flood in the town of Sunflower

***Do not drive or walk through areas where water covers roadways.  The water may be deeper than it appears.  Please use extreme caution if venturing near riverbanks.  Move to higher ground immediately should rising water threaten you safety.  Remember....Turn Around, Don't Drown!***
